Word Automation Services is a new feature of SharePoint 2010 that can help in these scenarios. It is a shared service that provides unattended, server-side conversion of documents into other formats, and some other important pieces of functionality. It was designed from the outset to work on servers and can process many documents in a reliable and predictable manner.Using Word Automation Services, you can convert from Open XML WordprocessingML to other document formats. For example, you may want to convert many documents to the PDF format and spool them to a printer or send them by e-mail to your customers. Or, you can convert from other document formats (such as HTML or Word 97-2003 binary documents) to Open XML word-processing documents. In addition to the document conversion facilities, there are other important areas of functionality that Word Automation Services provides, such as updating field codes in documents, and converting altChunk content to paragraphs with the normal style applied. These tasks can be difficult to perform using the Open XML SDK 2.0. However, it is easy to use Word Automation Services to do them. In the past, you used Word Automation Services to perform tasks like these for client applications. However, this approach is problematic. The Word client is an application that is best suited for authoring documents interactively, and was not designed for high-volume processing on a server. When performing these tasks, perhaps Word will display a dialog box reporting an error, and if the Word client is being automated on a server, there is no user to respond to the dialog box, and the process can come to an untimely stop. The issues associated with automation of Word are documented in the Knowledge Base article Considerations for Server-side Automation. The SharePoint Online Client Components SDK can be used to enable development with SharePoint Online. Notice that we do recommend using rather NuGet packages than installing CSOM assemblies to GAC.Important! The package includes a comprehensive collection of client-side object model (CSOM) DLLs including the portable libraries, enabling development on devices. These plugins allow you to connect to these servers, access, modify, save and overwrite the files present on them, all from directly within the Editor.Note that to access these files, appropriate login credentials are required. The Files themselves are also not edited directly on the server, but instead the Editor saves a local copy to the current drive while editing. If you have the function enabled, some of these plugins, SharePoint for example, will flag the document as "Checked out" until you check it back in.If accessing these cloud utilities from the browser, note that most browsers will open a native pdf viewer within themselves, and must be manually configured to open the files in the Editor. Files opened to the Editor in this manner cannot be relied upon to correctly check in/out files. Depending on the browser, you may need to save a local copy of the document, and then re-upload it to your cloud server to correctly save or check in these documents.Logging in to a Cloud Server in PDF-XChange EditorNote that most Cloud Servers use a similar login process, to summarize: Create an account Within the Editor, Add a Place Some servers may ask for a URL before logging in. Enter your login information Use the new Place to access your cloud filesCreate a PlaceTo begin you will need to setup login
